Working from my studio near Lewes in East Sussex, my ink paintings and collages convey an appreciation for the natural world. Inspired by the outstanding local environment as well as everyday natural 'treasures', my work depicts the local downland, forests and coastline and the colour, shapes and patterns in flowers, fruit and shells. Using lightfast using inks, my paintings evolve using expressive gestural brushstrokes and marks working at my studio table or off the floor, I absolutely love using inks for their rich, sparkling colours whether that’s with a brush, a blob or with a splatter and I value continuing to grow with every discovery using this medium.
Originally from Brighton, I studied at Eastbourne College of Art and Brighton Polytechnic/University (BA Illustration) in the late 1980’s and after a complete artistic break I returned to painting in 2013 when I came back to live in Sussex. In 2016 I joined the Chalk Gallery, artist-led cooperative in Lewes and in 2019/20 became its Chairperson. As well as being part of the Chalk community, I regularly participate in shows and exhibitions in and around Sussex and occasionally run workshops on collage.
My work can be divided into three collections, each of which is quite unique and distinctive. My most recent series of work being my Framescapes in which the painting spills out onto and over the sides of the wood frame, making these as much 3-D artworks as as they are 2-D paintings. My wood panels series is a collection of atmospheric paintings of imagined places but very much inspired by living in Sussex. My decorative collages are a series of ink and mixed-media artworks in which I use ink and decorative papers as the means of narrating a story.
